Despite its location in one of the hottest and driest regions on our planet, Niger has one of the richest aquifers of the world. The land on top is very fertile and arable. However, it lacks the financial and technical means to pump up the water and irrigate vast and fertile plains. Together with the agricultural faculty of the University of Ghent, IIDG will launch a study of how to tap into this aquifer by means of sustainable power generation and select the optimal crops to grow in this zone. By doing this, we create jobs, replace expensive and currency- consuming imports, and contribute to the improvement of the Niger trade balance.
